Situated in a quiet part of the Mormoiron village just 25 minutes from Avignon in the Vaucluse department. Villa Petrarque is right in the heart of the country recently made even more famous by the Peter Mayle series on books on French Country life. What's Nearby:The village, though small, is very well equipped with
shops and services: two butchers, baker, grocer/greengrocer, pharmacy, café,
newsagent/tobacconist, bank, post office, restaurant, florist and... three hairdressers.
There is also a small market of local produce on Sunday mornings. Two
larger villages, Bédoin and Mazan, are 7 and 6 km away respectively. Each
has a larger choice of shops and cafés, as well as a bank with a Visa cash
dispenser. Bédoin also has an attractive Provençal market every Monday
morning. Carpentras, which is 15 km away, has one of the largest markets
in the region every Friday morning. Tennis courts are available for hire
on the edge of the village, and there are many delightful walks in the immediate
vicinity, as well as a clean lake with sandy beaches (and safe for swimming) two
minutes' drive away. The scenery in the region is both spectacular and varied, ranging from olive groves, vineyards, lavender fields and cherry orchards to ochre cliffs, pine forests and the slopes of the 2,000-metre Mont Ventoux. Ten minutes' drive away are the vertiginous Gorges de la Nesque, through which the road leads to the lavender fields of the Plateau de Sault. The lavender festival in Sault, in August, is well worth a visit. Also near at hand are the lovely hilltop village of Gordes and the twelfth-century Cistercian abbey at Sénanque. Avignon and Orange are 40 minutes' drive away; Nîmes, Arles and Aix-en-Provence slightly more. The Avignon theatre and dance festival in July is justly famous, as are the Chorégies in Orange. During the summer almost every town and village has its own fête with local folklore, wine-tasting and al fresco dining and entertainment, as well as cultural/musical events, usually of a very high standard and often featuring celebrated international performers. Many villages also hold antique fairs in July and August, and Isle-sur-la-Sorgue -- one of the largest antique centres in Europe -- is just 18km away. Mormoiron is in the heart of the Côtes de Ventoux wine-growing area, and both local co-operatives and independent producers are numerous. All welcome tasting and discussion. Other, more celebrated appellations in the immediate area are Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Rasteau -- while Château Neuf du Pape is a mere 45 km away. There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from in the surrounding towns and villages, offering good and sometimes memorable cuisine.
